A research study published this month in the Annals of Internal Medicine is garnering some attention. The study is about Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and major media outlets including the New York Times Well Blog, Time Magazine, NBC News, and CNN have covered the study. I wrote a blog post earlier this year about the topic that you can find here.
Here are a few tidbits from the study that I found interesting:
“7 million men and 1.4 million women” have “strains that can cause cancers of the throat, tongue and other areas of the head and neck.”
“the number of men with HPV-related cancer of the oropharynx – the tongue, tonsils and back of the throat – has rapidly increased and has already surpassed the incidence of cervical cancer among women.”
“Human Papilloma Virus infections overall and high-risk HPV oral infections in particular were ‘significantly associated’ with cigarette and marijuana use.”
For information on how to prevent against HPV, please read my blog post and/or contact your pediatrician.
