This blog is an addition to our first blog on mouthguards. Since the writing of April’s blog post, I’m pleased to announce there have been a few changes in the marketplace for mouthguards:

  1. Shock Doctor’s Braces Mouthguard became the first mouthguard endorsed by the American Association of Orthodontists. This is a great mouthguard that is “stock” in the sense that it does not require any customization (remember: customization may not allow for tooth movement while in braces) but gives excellent protection. It can be bought as a single arch to protect the upper teeth or for both upper and lower arches. For the protection of both arches, search for the Shock Doctor Braces Double Mouthguard.  Varieties are available with straps and without. The Shock Doctor Braces Mouthguard gets my full endorsement for a mouthguard to use while in orthodontic treatment!
  2. CUSTMBITE Athletic Mouthguard became the first mouthguard endorsed by the American Dental Association. This is a boil-and-bite mouthguard that is customizable and offers excellent protection.
  3. In the world of boil-and-bite mouthguards, I’d like to endorse the Shock Doctor Gel Max. There are a number of varieties of this mouthguard, but they are all very comfortable with great protection.
