OUR JFO SMILE TRANSFORMATIONS
The Amazing Smile Transformations Of Our Patients
This is one of my favorite smile transformations of 2022. The really special part for me (and her) was going through treatment with her sister and that they finished on exactly the same day! I often tell siblings going through treatment together about how my orthodontic treatment took 1.5 years longer than my twin brother’s treatment and how I sympathize with the sibling who’s treatment takes longer. It is really special to finish on the same day with two beautiful smiles!

There are many factors that we take into account when creating a treatment plan for our patients. Aidan was looking for a nicer smile and we made adjustments to help boost his self-esteem and confidence. What a transformation. Congratulations, Aidan!

Dr. Joosse’s favorite thing is closing spaces in front teeth. It makes such a difference in the smile and in one’s confidence to smile. Makinsey had an amazing smile transformation in 12 months with Invisalign clear aligners.

Ben came to us seeking solutions for missing front teeth. Whenever someone is missing teeth, there are two general options: replace the missing teeth or close spaces and pretend like nothing is missing. I LOVE the second option and pursue closing spaces wherever possible because replacement of missing teeth is costly both from a monetary and time perspective. When we can achieve great results like this, nobody realizes that teeth are missing!
Liz came to us seeking a nicer smile. She got an amazing smile transformation AND a healthier bite. We are all loving Liz’s new smile!

“This was a 15 month Invisalign case start to finish! Arlen was the BEST patient. He wore his Invisalign trays 22 hours/day and he wore rubber bands exactly as I prescribed. His reward: a perfect smile and a perfect bite. The transformation is incredible and a great reminder of what can be done when you put a talented orthodontist together with a motivated patient!”

There are a few things that make Sela’s treatment exceptional: first, we got her smile looking great in time for her wedding day, which is always a fun achievement. Second, I think her smile is one of my favorites of the year. I especially love the creation of “smile arc” which means that her upper teeth follow the curvature of her lower lip.

“Creating beautiful smiles is the most fun part of being an orthodontist and it is even more fun when you get really fun patients and even MORE fun when you get really fun patients loving their smile again. Ellen doesn’t really need more confidence, but I love the added confidence she has with her new smile!”

Treatment is always a partnership and sometimes you get AMAZING partners for treatment. Andrew was a most amazing partner which is why he finished with an AMAZING result in 15 months. What makes Andrew’s treatment especially remarkable are the magnitude of changes both in the front-to-back changes illustrated by the blue/red lines and the vertical change in terms of how much more visible the lower front teeth are after treatment. Not only did we get remarkable changes for the health of his bite, but we achieved a great esthetic result too. Andrew now has quite the smile to show off!

“Good orthodontics is a partnership. In this case, we used some “permanent rubber bands,” which are really just springs, to help change the bite so that we could close spaces. As we’ve said before, closing space between front teeth is Dr. Joosse’s favorite treatment! This photo might now show it but Benji was quite excited to get braces off and we are all loving the result!”

Best smile transformation of the week. Not every smile transformation starts with crazy crowding or teeth in strange places, but what a difference orthodontics can make! We love Kylie’s new smile! (Done with braces in 17 months).

This is one of my favorite transformations of 2022 because: 1) I love closing spaces between front teeth (seriously, there is nothing better) and 2) her smile is gorgeous! Jaleah was an amazing Invisalign patient and she wore her aligners exactly as prescribed which is part of the reason why she got such an amazing result!

Amaya’s case really demonstrates what is possible when patients follow instruction and wear aligners for 22 hours/day. Her treatment took an amazing 14 months and we accomplished a lot! I LOVE her new smile!

Closing space between front teeth is my favorite thing to do as an orthodontist. But, it isn’t always as easy as people think because sometimes space is there because of the bite. We have to change the bite to close the space and keep the space closed. Congratulations, Olivia on your new smile!

Good treatment is always a partnership and sometimes you get amazing partners in treatment. Avery’s treatment started with a combination appliance that combines expansion with front to back bite correction. Her excellent compliance with wearing rubber bands allowed us to transition to braces earlier than expected and to finish treatment in a total of 21 months (she was only in braces for 17 months!).

This amazing girl now has an amazing smile to be proud of. We started with some expansion with a palate expander and then added braces.

Lauren’s smile is a great example of a significant functional change (she can now bite into things with her front teeth) but also esthetically as the curvature of her upper teeth now follow the curvature of her lower lip. We call this “smile arc” and it is one of the fundamentals of a great smile!

Kylie’s treatment was completed in just over a year and a half and done with braces. The change is incredible!

This is a fantastic treatment of a traumatic edge-to-edge anterior bite and posterior open bite (many teeth in the back do not touch) with braces and extraction of teeth. But, the best part was creating this beautiful smile!

I LOVE treating parents of my teenage patients. I love it because they gave the gift of an awesome smile to their child/children and then they wanted the same. I feel like parents deserve it after providing for their kids. Anyway, sometimes you get awesome parents like Heather who make our days more fun every time she’s in the office. Thanks for being great, Heather; and we love that beautiful new smile!
Check out the beautiful new smile on this lovely lady! Nora, you look amazing with the new smile and that JFO t-shirt!

This isn’t the most dramatic transformation from start to finish because this patient had orthodontic treatment as a teenager; however, I love the subtleties of this case. She came to JFO wanting to fix some crowding on the lower front teeth and to fix the crooked upper front teeth. We accomplished all of that while also making the bite healthier (the evidence is that you can see more of her lower front teeth when biting down). Most importantly, we preserved her “smile arc,” which is how her upper front teeth follow the curvature of her lower lip. This is what makes her smile so beautiful!

One of the things I love about orthodontics is how esthetics and function are related. Let me explain: Tim came to me because he said his bite was uncomfortable and was causing him headaches. This is common when front teeth hit and it also causes front teeth to break and be worn down prematurely. We fixed his bite and the result is no more headaches, a comfortable bite, but also a much more esthetically pleasing smile. Congrats, Tim, on your awesome results!

Wherever there is gum recession and/or a history of bone loss like you see on the lower front teeth, Invisalign is a great treatment option because it allows the patient to brush and floss normally. This is extra important because moving teeth in unhealthy gums can actually do damage to the gums. Invisalign is also a great choice in cases like this because it allows for slowed down tooth movement, which is also important when bone has been lost. But, also, CHECK OUT THAT SMILE CHANGE!

We are all loving Ryan’s new smile! Ryan is a perfect example of how amazing results can be achieved with excellent compliance. I used Invisalign to treat Ryan and he was very engaged in treatment; often wearing his aligners for 22 hours/day.

Closing spaces in the front teeth is my favorite thing as an orthodontist because I know first-hand what a difference it can make for one’s smile and their confidence. It made a huge difference in my own life and it has made a huge difference for Alona as well. Congratulations, Alona, your smile is beautiful!

Sometimes, the magnitude of underbites (and overbites) is so large that they cannot be fixed with orthodontics alone. In these cases, orthodontists work with oral surgeons to create ideal results using a combination of orthodontics and orthognathic surgery. Orthognathic surgery is a controlled fracture and resetting of the jaws. The results are life changing as you can see here by the change in bite (no more underbite!), the change in the face (look at the lip positions!), and the change in the smile! His mom told me that he’s never smiled so much as he has after this treatment.

There is nothing better than closing spaces between front teeth because it makes such a difference in the smile and how someone feels about their smile. Luke’s treatment took just over a year and I used Invisalign. What a difference!

I love the huge transformational changes that are possible with orthodontics. But, I also love the more subtle changes like this one. From a distance, most people wouldn’t have noticed much about Cameron’s smile before she had braces. But, her result is awesome! I LOVE her smile and how it adds to her natural beauty.

Kaitlyn completed her orthodontic treatment one orthodontic appointment ahead of her brother and when all of her family was still in town for the holidays. So, she got to celebrate her new smile with her whole family (and rub it in a little to her brother too)! In addition to an amazing smile, I (Dr. J) am happy with how much healthier her bite is. In particular, notice how you can see much more of the lower teeth when she bites down. Making sure that front teeth don’t overlap too much is important for protecting front teeth from wearing down prematurely.

I am very proud of this result! Ella finished her braces treatment in 17 months with an amazing result. I love her smile, especially how the upper teeth follow the contour of her lower lip. Congratulations, Ella!

Notice the change in the vertical positions of the upper front teeth. They now follow the curvature of the lower lip. We call this “smile arc” and it is a major component to a beautiful smile.

Lincoln’s treatment took 19 months: 4 months in an easy appliance to correct the overbite and then 15 months in braces. We love easy and efficient treatment at JFO!

Although her teeth were fairly well aligned, there was much work to be done on Esther’s bite. Her finished smile is one of my favorites!

Gretchen was one of our long distance patients (from Norfolk), but her smile transformation was worth it!
Robin’s Invisalign® treatment took 11 months and the change to her smile is incredible! Robin can’t believe she didn’t do this treatment years ago!

This one took me (Dr. Joosse) a little longer than I had hoped (although I was only “late” by 1 month according to my estimate at the beginning of treatment), but it’s a total home run. And, Ethan just happens to be a really, really awesome kid. We’ve loved getting to know you, Ethan, and we know that you will succeed wherever you go!

This is one of my favorite Phase 1 treatments that I’ve ever done. Jillian came to us by way of referral from her general dentist. Her general dentist recognized that Jillian had a crossbite meaning that she has upper teeth that are to the inside of lower teeth. In adults, crossbites can cause TMJ problems. In kids, crossbites can cause growth problems. Jillian’s treatment took 13 months and she was treated with a palatal expander and few braces on the upper teeth only. The change in her smile is incredible, but just a byproduct of the crossbite correction. Jillian is an awesome girl with a new smile to match her awesomeness.
There is nothing more gratifying than closing spaces between front teeth and giving someone a smile they love! Congratulations, Vera, on your new, amazing JFO smile!

Melis came to us after a failed treatment from an at-home aligner company. The at-home aligners couldn’t get her teeth straight and she was unhappy with her smile. After her frustration with at-home aligners, she wanted to be treated with braces, but with the most esthetic option possible. We used clear braces. Her treatment took 14 months and the results are stunning. Even if her at-home aligners succeed in making her teeth straight (which they didn’t), they could not produce a smile like this. The change in her smile underscores why having a board certified orthodontist involved will always lead to superior results than an at-home aligner company.

Christiano became one of our favorite patients throughout his treatment and we are loving his new smile!

Meet Alyssa. She wanted her gap closed and we delivered. This beauty is now smiling bigger than ever and we love it!

Meet Jeremiah. Jeremiah was treated at 8 years old because of his one upper front tooth that was behind the lower front teeth. We call this an “anterior crossbite” and anterior crossbites should be fixed early for several reasons: 1) they can cause abnormal growth of the jaws 2) they can lead to gum problems because they may force the teeth into an unusual bite relationship and 3) they can lead to premature tooth damage, again due to the aberrant bite relationship. We put braces on just the front four teeth and 2 teeth in the back and his treatment lasted 10 months. Of course, in addition to a healthier bite, he also has a great smile!
We are so excited for Abigail and her new smile. Abby is one of the nicest people we know and now she has the smile to match her personality!

We are so excited to show off Ginger’s new smile and new bite! Ginger came to JFO seeking to correct some bite changes that she had been experiencing as a result of a nightguard that was made for her. The bite was fully corrected and the enhanced smile was an added benefit! Ginger, we love you and we love your new smile! Congratulations!
This is Emmy. Awesome girl. Awesome patient. Awesome smile. This treatment was done with braces and it took 21 months (including a little pause during the COVID shutdown). We are loving Emmy’s new smile!

Taylor just got her braces off and look at this beautiful result! One of the goals of our treatment was to make her smile less “gummy” and I think we did a great job. Taylor, your new smile is AMAZING!
This is perhaps the greatest transformation of any of our patients…over the nearly two years of treatment, Octavia made a lot of changes in her life and we are so proud of her. The mission of JFO is to empower people through beautiful smiles to realize their full potential. The JFO team wasn’t the catalyst for Octavia’s changes, we were just part of her transformation, but we take braces off confident that this woman is now realizing her full potential. She is just about to finish nursing school and about to use her gifts and talents to serve others. Her personality lights up the room and now she has the smile to match her personality. We all had to hold back the tears after we took her braces off. Octavia, we are so incredibly proud of you! Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to serve you!

This week’s smile transformation is Noah. I always enjoyed talking baseball with Noah (even though he’s a Yankees fan) and I’m so proud of the difference we made together with Invisalign. We finished treatment just in time for a first date! Noah, show off that amazing smile to the world; we are so happy for you!
This is one of the most amazing smile transformations and it couldn’t happen to a nicer girl! Alex, we love your new smile and we know that you will show it off to the world! And, don’t let that beautiful face fool you, she’s tough on the soccer field!

Orthodontic treatment isn’t always about just straightening teeth. In this case, Samuel started with a very large overbite. His overbite was so big, he had trouble closing his lips together. He was treated with braces and extraction of two upper teeth and the difference in the shape of his face is amazing. He now has a rock’n smile and it couldn’t happen to a nicer kid. Samuel, we will miss seeing you, but we are confident that you are destined for greatness!

We are so excited to show off Sam and her new smile…it’s quite a change from where she started and we love putting amazing smiles on amazing people! Sam is one of those amazing people; seemingly always in a good mood and a pleasure to see at every appointment. Sam, thanks for being so great!
This is Ashley. We are all loving her new smile. I love what she said: “If I had known what a difference orthodontics would make, I would have done it years ago.”

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Haileigh’s new smile. When she started, her smile was a little “gummy,” and orthodontic treatment can help reduce “gummy” smiles. Her smile at the end is amazing and just right for an incredible girl!

What a change in her smile and look at her showing it off! Chris, we love your smile and can’t wait to see the great things you are going to do!

I wish I had gotten a video of the “Oh My God” when Alaina got to see her finished smile! This one took a while, but with lots of hard work and a great patient, we got an amazing result! Alaina is beaming with her new smile!

After

This is a a stunning change that occurred in 14 months from start to finish with braces. There are two things that I think make this a really great result:
1) How the upper teeth follow the lower lip much more than they did at the start.
2) The effect of the enameloplasty that was done towards the end of treatment.
Enameloplasty is a slight reshaping or manicuring of the teeth to take out rough edges or corners so that the teeth look for smooth, symmetric, and esthetic. A minor amount of reshaping can make a huge difference.

1. Harper started with her back teeth almost a whole tooth out of place. The red lines should match up. Notice how the upper tooth was a whole tooth forward of where it belongs. Although you don’t see a big overbite at the start, it is there, hidden by the positions of the front teeth. Notice, at the finish how the red lines match up. The posterior teeth are now in their correct positions.
2. Harper started with what we call a “deep bite.” That means that she has excessive vertical overlap of her upper front teeth with her lower front teeth. Note how much of her lower teeth are visible under the black line at the start and at the finish. By correcting her deep bite, we will have hopefully prevented unnecessary wear of her front teeth later in life.
3. Harper started with a “deep curve of spee,” which means that the lower teeth form a ramp or curvature noted by the blue line. One of our treatment objectives in creating a healthy long term bite is reducing that ramp to more of a flat line. That was accomplished very well in this case.
