The Sign of the Seal

Recently, while waiting for a prescription to be filled at Target, I spent some time browsing the oral health care aisle. I was blown away by how many choices there are: there is a mind-numbing variety of toothbrushes, toothpastes, mouthwashes, etc. How are you supposed to know which to choose?  I’ll address some of these things in an upcoming series of blog posts, but let’s start with this: look for the Seal of Acceptance by the American Dental Association. The seal means that solid research has shown this product to be both safe and effective. It’s actually amazing that products don’t have to be effective (or even good) to end up on the shelves! So when you are standing in that aisle looking at all the choices, you can narrow your choice down by eliminating those that don’t have the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

About the ADA Seal of Acceptance

Ada seal of acceptanceThe American Dental Association (ADA) has been around for over 125 years, promoting safety and successful dental products. Not just any dental product receives the seal, however. Submissions must include adequate data and/or lab results demonstrating that the product is safe and effective, according to ADA standards. The ADA Seal of Acceptance, if approved, is good for five years. After that, the seal for the product must be renewed.

The ADA Seal of Acceptance is an important tool for dental and orthodontic professionals to make informed choices when recommending products to patients. Likewise, it’s a helpful indicator to you when looking for products as well.

Doctor Joosse recognizes the importance of the Seal of Excellence from the American Dental Association and hopes you take the time to find products with this seal when you’re looking for new products. For an appointment with Dr. Joosse, schedule with us online! We look forward to seeing you.
