In a previous blog post, I talked about my own orthodontic experience. It absolutely changed my life, particularly because of the confidence it gave me to smile. But did my orthodontic treatment make me more attractive? Is it a reason why I have a beautiful wife?

A new study suggests the answer is yes, orthodontic treatment can make you more attractive. The study, performed in Europe, photographed 60 Can orthodontic treatment make you more attractive?laypeople.  The photos were then doctored so that only individual characteristics were shown. For example, a photo of a person’s face might be blocked out so that only their hair or only their chin was visible. Then they asked evaluators, again lay people, to rate the attractiveness of the people based on individual characteristics. Attractiveness was rated based on the following features: smile, nose, eyes, chin, hair, eyebrows, and skin. Separately, the full, unedited photos were rated by the same evaluators for general facial attractiveness. Statistics were then used to determine how much each individual characteristic contributed to people’s overall attractiveness.

The results of the study were staggering: the smile is by far the most important facial feature, accounting for about 75% of the overall attractiveness!  In case you were wondering, eyes are the next most important feature and they are more important to the attractiveness of men, not women. Skin seems to be more important for women than men.

So thank you again, Dr. Lindauer (my orthodontist), for my smile and for making me more attractive!
