Earlier this year, many parents were unexpectedly made their children’s teachers when school shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic. Those who already teach know that teaching requires a special kind of patience and love for those you teach. It’s not easy, but homeschooling is certainly doable.

Dr. Joosse and his wife, Alex, also became impromptu teachers earlier this year. Between virtual smile assessments and other aspects of his practice, Joosse Family Orthodontics, that are still in operation, it has been a busy time for the Joosse family. Dr. Joosse expects your life is no different. Despite the order to social distance, many lives are still busy, especially those of parents. Dr. Joosse knows the importance of learning, which is why he created an educational video all about teeth.  You can find the video above, or it has also been posted on YouTube.

Homeschooling with dr. JoosseThe lesson revolves around dental hygiene for children, and is a topic Dr. Joosse and his team members bring into the local elementary schools and kindergarten classes. In this lesson, Dr. Joosse explains more about what dentists and orthodontists do, and also provides examples with his live audience (his kids!). Using a giant set of teeth, he walks his kids through the steps of properly brushing the teeth and lets them take turns being active participants.

While you may not have the same reassures available to you (i.e. no giant set of teeth), you can still follow along with Dr. Joosse or alter the hands-on learning to fit the needs of your class. For instance, you could use your own mouth as an example, and then let your kids practice brushing on your teeth. Find ways to make your lessons interesting to help engage the kids into active learning.
